As a busy working mum of two, I sometimes fantasise about what I would do if I were able to be alone for an hour or two.
My house is mostly a gorgeous cacophony of kids squealing with joy. Sometimes it’s a dark place with kids screaming in stereo. But it is never quiet.
Don’t get me wrong, I get alone time. I sometimes get my hair done alone (which I unfortunately detest) and I am by myself in the car all the way to work, and on the way home too. I also feed the dog alone. (Bliss)
But I am talking a few hours, no obligations, no housework, no phone calls, no personal maintenance and no multi tasking.
A few hours of pure, unadulterated me time.
What would you do?
I have a plan.
When I finally get that me-time, I want to hire a dance studio, lock the door, have a tequila shot, put a leotard on, crank up the stereo and go completely NUTS.
Playlist as follows.
Dancing in the Dark – Bruce Springsteen
Teardrops – Womack and Womack
Raspberry Beret – Prince
Get Off - Prince
(actually Prince features a lot)
Lose Yourself to Dance – Daft Punk
Crazy In Love – Beyonce
And then a bit of Bon Iver for a moody, slow, roll around the floor and look wistfully over ones shoulder dance number. (will need a dimmer on the lights)
I would leap, writhe, tear shit up, do some floor work and basically own that dance studio. I would sweat up a storm and forget about all my responsibilities, sleeplessness and guilt over the need to be thinner, the need to be kinder, the need to grow tomatoes and the need to not need stuff.
I would feel free.
Then I would towel off, chuck on my tracky dax and get back down into the trenches, because I do like the trenches.
But sometimes you gotta lose yourself to dance.
